The silence in the colossal cave seemed to overshadow the noisy water. Mrinalini sat in the centre of the make-shift sleeping space on top of one of the wooden crates. Five youths stood before her in a semi-circle. Their young, tired faces were turned to her in shock.
Bhanu was the first to speak. “Did anyone see you coming here?”
“Ma Durga save us,” Mrinalini joined her palms and voiced a short prayer to the Goddess Durga. “It wasn’t easy but I managed it. No one saw me. Got you some more food.” Mrinalini gestured towards the cloth parcel that Rahim was holding now. “I don’t know when Sajjan will be back,” she continued. I can’t come here tomorrow morning. Told them I’ve gone out to feed the dogs on the street corner. Had to go out the front door and climb up the banyan tree outside to reach the balcony of the Raja-Rani room. Luckily, I can still climb it. It took all my strength to open the trap door under the bed, though. That old iron latch is too big and heavy. I was worried that the soldiers would see it but they never reached the Guest Wing.”
Bhanu grunted. “How did this happen?”
