The Price of Magic

Episode 31: The Life & Exploits of Princess Amodini

For the first time since her arrival in Satayu, Anjalika woke up feeling rejuvenated and content. As usual, Satya’s smiling face was at her side.

Until the day before, Aunt Sulochana would have been sitting close by as well. Instead, Vidyuta was stretched out on the divan, snoring.

A guard stood at attention outside the windows. On the young general’s orders, an armed warrior patrolled the exits at all times.

While Satya prepared to retire for the day, the maids brought in a tray of breakfast for the dancer.

“How is your aunt?” Anjalika asked, sipping a cup of hot coffee.

“She’s resting in my room,” Satya replied, her voice trembling with regret. “She lost a lot of blood. Rajvaidya has been treating her since last night. Uncle Madhava is with her, too.”

“I’m sure she’ll be fine.” Anjalika reassured her. “It was very brave of her to attack that man in her condition. I still can’t believe I saw her do that.”

“She’s my hero.” Satya smiled through moist eyes.

“And you’re my hero! I can’t thank you enough for saving my life.”

“You still need lots of rest. We don’t know if there’ll be any long-term side-effects of the poison. Please don’t thank me until you have completely recovered.”

“I’ll be dancing before you know it.” Anjalika chuckled.
