The Dancer of Videha

Episode 26: The Life & Exploits of Princess Amodini

Rajvaidya’s two assistant physicians remained standing at their places.

Veerata turned back to Satya, releasing her shoulders and gesturing towards the bed. “You may begin now. We will provide you with everything that you may require.”

“But Rajvaidya–”

“Please don’t mind what Rajvaidya said. He’s just doing his duty. Vidyuta and I have complete faith in you. Proceed!”

Vidyuta nodded. Satya took a deep breath, steeling herself for the task ahead. To everyone’s surprise, instead of walking towards the bed, she went to the opposite end of the room and threw open all the curtains.

Stunned faces stared at her.

Vidyuta asked, “Satya, what are you doing?”

“Letting in the sunlight,” she replied. “I can’t examine the patient in such feeble lighting. Anyway, it’s not good for her to stay in the dark for so long.”

“We are aware of that,” one of the physicians said. “We only keep them closed during the day to maintain secrecy. She is permitted sunbathing in the garden for two hours every morning before eight o’clock.”

“But the room needs sun too. She’s been here for a month, hasn’t she?”

“The maids clean the place everyday.”

“Simply cleaning is not enough. My teacher, Acharya Dhanwantari, says the sick room must be aired out and allowed ample sunlight everyday. It helps speed up the patient’s recovery.” Satya approached the bed and knelt down next to it.

Veerata smiled, impressed once again. At the mention of Acharya’s name, the two physicians also looked at her with new respect. Vidyuta answered their questions about her medical studies at the university while Satya continued with her examination.

The sunlight revealed a sorry sight. Anjalika lay in a state of feverish coma in the middle of the bed. At first glanced, it appeared that the imperial physician was right. She would live only a couple of days more at the most.
